A Free Software available for displaying Radar Data in netCDF format

Roberto Vicente Calheiros, MRI/IPMet/UNESP, Bauru, Brazil

Data and image visualization are used intensively in both research and operations based on weather radar data. Free software to handle the data for the required applications, allowing dedicated developments to meet specific needs is generally not available. This retricts to some degree the possibilities of these applications. Therefore it is found useful to produce free software to make it possible to interested people to use, and modify the code according to particular requirements.

A free software, netCDF Viewer, released under GNU/GPL license is presented, that makes it possible to read data from meteorological radars in netCDF format . We have been using this software to display NEXRAD data. Other types of input format can easily be implemented. This software has many capabilities to perform cuts and visualize the data in graphical and numerical forms. Data can be explored interactively with the mouse and the keyboard, looking simultaneously at the display. The code has been written in C++/OpenGL using GLUI as the window manager. Source code, sample data, and documentation can be downloaded from [http://www.ipmet.unesp.br/pub/software/]

The main features of the Viewer are displayed in this Poster.
