In this study we used simple harmonic diffusion heat transfer equations for the soil and atmosphere to come up with a unified theory. This theory allows simultaneous estimation of the soil diffusivity and atmospheric heat diffusion coefficient, given daily maximum and minimum air and soil temperatures, and an assumption concerning the diurnal pattern of these temperatures. Data analysis from stations in the California Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the UC Davis Campbell Field Tract station yields realistic values of the transfer coefficients, when compared to eddy-covariance based transfer coefficient estimates.
