The Korea Local Radar Processing System (KLRPS) is developed to assimilate radar data into meso-scale models. The KLRPS is originally based on the radar preprocessing in Variational Doppler Radar Analysis System (VDRAS: Sun and Crook, 1997) for radial velocity and NOAA's Local Analysis and Prediction System (LAPS) for coordinate conversion. However, it has an independent software architecture with generalized parameters for the quality control of radar data and for the coordinate conversion of NWP models. The quality control of reflectivity in KLRPS includes the fuzzy classifier to remove anomalous propagation and ground clutter. The fuzzy classifier can be easily applied to any radar with specific fuzzy parameters derived from its echo characteristics. The velocity de-aliasing algorithm has local unfolding and global unfolding with background winds derived from observations (radio sonde, wind profiler and AWS) and/or meso-scale models (Lim et al., 2009). VVP algorithm was also added for retrieving winds and improving the quality control of radial velocity. The quality controlled radar data from KLRPS are assimilated into VDRAS for the evaluation of impacts on very short range forecast. In comparison with those from KMA QC data, the intensity and distribution of convective cells are more realistic in VDRAS with KLRPS.
