The CWCE's overarching goal is to engage the government, private and academic sectors from within the AMS membership and beyond on wide-ranging topics of strong interest to the profession. These include energy, renewable energy, water resources, and resiliency to impacts from hurricanes. New initiatives include investigating the links between weather, climate and human health, applications for the burgeoning field of mobile (vehicle) observations, linking disparate meteorological monitoring networks (Nationwide Network of Networks), financial instruments (i.e. weather derivatives), and the use of social media for mapping disasters. Improving climate change communications/discussions and uncertainty in weather/climate forecasts are also presently being undertaken, and the number of new topics is steadily increasing with Commission activities. On a more grand scale, the CWCE has teamed up with the AMS Policy program to issue formal Statements on national weather and climate priorities for federal agencies and the structures for the provision of the ever increasing demand for climate services. The CWCE is one of six Commissions within the AMS and is the most recent at only 7 years and is now the largest at over 500 members. Structurally, the CWCE has three Boards the Board on Enterprise Economic Development, Board on Enterprise Communication, and the Board on Enterprise Planning and is the only AMS Commission with a Steering Committee. There are three major CWCE-sponsored events every year. These include the AMS Washington Forum in the spring, and the AMS Summer Community Meeting and the new Symposium on the Weather and Climate Enterprise to be held during the AMS Annual Meeting. An overview of the CWCE will be provided as a means of reaching the AMS broadcast community.
