The NEXRAD tri-agencies (Department of Commerce, National Weather Service (NWS);
Department of Defense, Air Force Weather; and Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)) continue to support activities to steadily improve the science and technology of the WSR-88D. Advancements in removable IT storage hardware now allow the Radar Operations Center to record and archive a variety of situational weather radar cases of Level 1 (I and Q) data from both non-operational/testbed and operational WSR-88D radars. The data is made available to the research and development community via National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI).
This poster will provide a summary of the process for data collection, selection criteria for the cases collected, an overview of cases that have been archived, a list of potential uses, and the process for acquiring the data; and will describe technical and logistical challenges to data collection.
