Boundary Waters (Hyatt Regency Minneapolis)
The Eastern region is a major area for agriculture, industry, and tourism. The understanding of rainstorm characteristics is essential for disaster mitigation and water management in this area. In this study, convective rainstorm characteristics over Eastern Thailand during the influence of southwest monsoon (May to August) in year 2018 to 2021 are analysed by using TITAN (Thunderstorm Identification, Tracking, Analysis, and Nowcasting) algorithm. The reflectivity data from S-band radars are merge and track rainstorms with reflectivity thresholds at 35 dBZ over their life cycle. The parameters such as the number of rain cell, size, volume, intensity, and centroid location are analysed in temporal and spatial terms. The results show that, the spatial of rain cell most frequent in Chanthaburi and Trat province. Form the statistical analysis, the number of storm trend to be reduced from May to August and the areas of storms are less than 35 square kilometres, and the largest area averaged over the storm lifespan does not exceed 45 square kilometres. The movement of rainstorms is strongly related to the wind field of monsoon season and often oriented from SW to NE. The improved understanding of convective rain in the Eastern Thailand would be especially important for assessing climate variability and to estimate the rain intensity.
