Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are flood makers, but also drought busters.

This presentation will assist broadcast meteorologists to better understand atmospheric rivers and communicate AR impacts to the audience. The presentation will show the importance of AR forecast uncertainties related to timing, duration, landfall location and coverage. Impacts include heavy rainfall, flooding, strong wind, landslides and heavy mountain snow. The presentation will include effects of climate change, use of the AR scale and resources for more information about ARs. A brief review of the December 2022 – January 2023 California AR storm sequence will be presented.
