Broadcast meteorologists play an essential role in the communication of critical information during high-impact weather events. In their respective communities, they are one of the most trusted individuals to provide timely, easy to understand information which often includes guidance on necessary safety measures before and during these events. The information provided by the broadcast meteorologists through multiple media venues in coordination with those disseminated through the National Weather Service is now often utilized by emergency managers before and during hazardous events. As a result, it is more important than ever for broadcast meteorologists to build on their existing knowledge of how best to serve in this important role and collaborate with the emergency management community to improve the combined effort in saving lives and property. Informal and formal education and training opportunities for broadcast meteorologists in fundamentals of emergency management can help to inform and lead to enhanced and more effective collaboration. This presentation will address the key opportunities for broadcast meteorologists to further contribute to their communities through their work with local and state emergency managers in addition to a brief overview of related education and training opportunities.
