Weather.gov is owned by the National Weather Service (NWS). Weather.gov and associated applications are frequently in the Top-10 list of most-visited federal websites with 1.5 billion visits per year. They are a major source of life- and property-saving weather/water/climate data and information for the public and NWS partners. Despite this, these web applications have not had any major public-facing upgrades in more than a decade.

The aim of the project is to rebuild Weather.gov to reflect the integrity and care NWS has for the people it serves. Because the mission and culture at NWS is built around serving, preparing, and protecting people, Weather.gov 2.0 must do the same. With the backing of NWS leadership and alignment across the organization – we are making significant progress on Weather.gov 2.0. User research has been conducted, we’ve prototyped our architecture, and a Minimum Viable Product is now available for users to use and provide feedback on. We’re currently in the “Expand” phase where we’re focused on improving/expanding core functionality, including exploring translations and probabilistic data – all guided by continued user feedback and research.
