After 17 years in broadcast television, an opportunity to exercise those skills outside of TV presented itself. I took a leap of faith and entered higher education. I use weather daily as a member of our emergency management team and I was surprised to find out how many valuable tools I have been able to bring over from the broadcasting world to higher education, through campus safety.

In now serve as the Public Information Officer for Institutional Compliance and security for Auburn University. I have been able to help write crisis communication plans, contribute to state-wide resiliency conversations, and become the official meteorologist for the university’s handling daily forecasts and severe weather briefings.

The goal of this presentation is to expand the horizon of current broadcasters who may be looking for a career pivot, but don’t want to abandon meteorology.

Often we minimize our own skillsets.

I want to restore confidence in broadcasters that their skillset is valuable and whether they choose to stay in a traditional broadcasting or not, there are options and opportunities.
