Retrieval of Ocean Water Parameters from Satellite Imagery and Their Dependence on Atmospheric Correction Models

Rushane D. Dyer, City College of New York, New York, NY; and A. Gilerson and S. Ahmed

Ocean color algorithms for the retrieval of chlorophyll [Chl] and mineral concentrations as well as water inherent optical properties (IOPs) from satellite reflectance spectra usually fail in coastal waters because of errors in atmospheric correction procedures. Recent advances in those procedures over coastal zones opened possibilities for more detailed studies of coastal areas using satellite imagery which includes analysis of spatial and temporal trends in [Chl]. We report on studies of MODIS data for various parameters for several years in Western, Central and Eastern areas of Long Island Sound using SeaDAS processing software and the SWIR and NIR atmospheric correction algorithms. Correlations between parameters retrieved using various procedures were calculated and analyzed.
