Observing at the Mesoscale: What Role Can the EPP Cooperative Centers Play in Answering Questions Asked by the National Academy

Raymond M. Hoff, Univ. of Maryland/CREST, Baltimore, MD

In 2009, the National Academy released the report "Weather and Climate from the Ground Up: A Nationwide Network of Networks" which was commissioned by a number of national agencies including NOAA. In this talk, the national needs referred to the National Academy for study will be reviewed and opportunities exist for the EPP Centers to contribute to a national network of networks of observations of the lower troposphere for a wide range of needs including climate, air quality, health, water, transportation, agriculture, etc. It is particularly timely to be aware of these opportunities as they are being discussed at the highest levels in the National Weather Service.
