Cool experiences doing Cold water research : What's happening in Alaska?

This paper discusses about science programs at the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), a scientific research organization responsible for the development and implementation of NOAA's scientific research on living marine resources in Alaska waters. The science we conduct covers a broad range of scientific disciplines and promotes stewardship of the oceans. Our research focuses on more than 250 fish and 42 marine mammal stocks distributed across 591,000 square miles in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which includes waters up to 200 nautical miles from the coasts of the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska and Aleutian Islands. Students have the opportunity to be a part of the research activities at the AFSC through our summer internship program. This presentation will give a general overview of the types of research being conducted by the AFSC, followed by a description of the AFSC summer internship program, the work of past interns and how students can apply.
