P2.58 Validation of UPRM Lidar with Calipso

Friday, 13 November 2009
Dolly Hernandez, University of Puerto Rico/NOAA/CREST, San Juan, PR

The main objective of this research is the validation of the UPRM Lidar system with the Calipso satellite. The backscatter and extinction profiles obtained from UPRM Lidar are discussed and compared with Calipso, at the 532nm wavelength. Additionally, this research presents a profile comparison of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) between Calipso and UPRM Lidar, using La Parguera AERONET station in the south western corner of Puerto Rico for the calculation of Lidar ratio. Profile data comparisons will be made during the Calipso passes closest to the Lidar station. Calipso satellite passes over Puerto Rico at distances less than 50 kilometers, approximately, twice a month.
