Space Weather Education at the Air Force Institute of Technology

Devin J. Della-Rose, Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH; and S. M. Quigley

The USAF Directorate of Weather is responsible for all Department of Defense space weather support. This requires a certain percentage of Air Force Weather meteorologists to obtain MS degrees in space physics. Since 1995 the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) has been educating these officers in-house at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. While all of our officer-students have undergraduate meteorology degrees, almost none of them possess strong backgrounds in the areas of physics that contribute to space weather. The resulting educational challenges will be a focus of this talk. Emphasis will also be placed on our space weather laboratory courses which introduce students to computer models, graphical support products, and analysis and forecast techniques used for DOD space weather support.
