Porting NESDIS Polar Soundings from a Cray to an IBM SP

Richard G. Kelley Jr., Computer Sciences Corporation, Suitland, MD

The Information Processing Division (IPD) of NESDIS' Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution distributes vertical soundings from Polar Orbiting Spacecraft. As the number of spacecraft and resolution increases, there's a need for updated computational capabilities. IPD responded to this requirement by moving its soundings processing software to an IBM Scalable Processor. This migration of some 650 modules of code was a non-trivial task, involving other platforms and extensive verification and validation efforts. The purpose of this poster is to present aspects of the migration to those who may be anticipating similar endeavors.
