15th Symposium on Global Change and Climate Variations

9.2

Update on Microwave-Based Atmospheric Temperatures by UAH

John R. Christy, University of Alabama, Huntsville, AL; and R. W. Spencer and D. Braswell

Global temperatures from the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) and its successor, the Advanced MSU (AMSU) have been updated to version 5.1, and now begin in Nov. 1978. Differences in methodology between the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Remote Sensing Systems will be discussed. New comparisons with independent measurements have been performed and continue to indicate signficant consistency with the UAH products. Recent climate variations include a record warm lower-stratospheric south polar temperature in Oct 2002 and a cooling of the lower troposphere in 2003 through July.
