Study of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the GOES-R and beyond

The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) is the next generation imager on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) beginning in 2012. This instrument will be used for a wide range of both qualitative and quantitative applications in many areas. These include weather, oceanography, numerical weather prediction, climate, natural hazards and hydrology. The ABI is slated to have 16 spectral bands, compared with five on the current GOES imagers. These additional bands will allow both improved products, as well as a number of new products. The ABI will include a number of improvements over the existing imager besides additional bands. The ABI will improve the spatial coverage from nominally 4 to 2 km for the infrared bands, as well as almost a five-fold increase of the coverage rate. A combination of data from GOES, AVIRIS, AIRS, NAST-I and MODIS are used to simulate the various aspects of the ABI.
