Initial Steps in Collaboration of NWS Digital Forecasts

Lynn P. Maximuk, NOAA/NWS, Pleasant Hill, MO

During the past year the National Weather Service (NWS) has begun to produce an experimental National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD). Production of this seven day high resolution digital database is shared by many different NWS forecast offices, including local Weather Forecast Offices (WFO) and national centers. As this data comes together in the NDFD, meteorological consistency in both time and space is essential as the increased temporal and spacial resolution makes apparent forecast discrepencies which were not noticed in the traditional textual product suite. During this time the agency has begun to prototype increased forecast collaboration methods designed to make maximum use of numerical model prediction while allowing local or specialized forecast offices to add value where possible. This paper will explore some of the challenges and successes in this development.
