The Real Time NOMADS Project: For Access To Operational Modeling Data and Value Added Products
Jordan C. Alpert, NOAA/NWS/NCEP, Camp Springs, MD; and J. Wang
Access to National Weather Service (NWS) operational numerical weather prediction model run history, including analysis ready observations and initial conditions, is a high priority need for technology infusion. While advances in science and technology drive the evolution of weather and climate information systems, advances in the dissemination of information advance technology infusion. “The NWS should make its data and products available in Internet-accessible digital form” is recommendation 5 of the National Research Council’s “Fair Weather: Effective Partnerships in Weather and Climate Services”. The case is made that the NOAA Operational Modeling Archive Distributed System (NOMADS) and the Real Time (RT) component project at NCEP satisfy this recommendation and present a seamless framework for serving NOAA’s real time and archived data base to value added retailers (VAR), public access, and for science and development. As one of many participants of NOMADS, NCEP serves its data base using Data Application Protocol (OPeN-DAP). OPeN-DAP, also known as DODS, provides a request-and-fulfill mechanism for access to archived and real time records at many locations, for example, the National Virtual Ocean Data System (NVODS). The soon to be completed NOAA National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) can be accessed via this approach when it becomes operational providing access to manual weather service forecasts. We present the status of these NOMADS projects and show how VAR’s can use these services as well as science researchers.
