11.3

The Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) System at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP)

Stephen Lord, NOAA/NWS/NCEP, Camp Springs, MD; and N. Seaman

The WRF System is being developed collaboratively with the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the U. S. Air Force and Navy, the Forecast Systems Laboratory and the Center for the Analysis and Prediction of Storms for use as an operational and research system. At NCEP, WRF operational applications will include mesoscale, nested ensemble runs, the North American run, and specialized applications for hurricanes, rapid updating and ensemble forecasts. The first implementation of WRF in NCEP operations is scheduled for October 2004 and will take the form of a small, multi-model ensemble run for nested domains. NCEP’s plan for WRF development and testing and milestones for WRF implementations will be described. .
