Modeling Entrainment and Boundary Layer Growth during a Bore Event using Different Turbulence Parameterizations and LES

During IHOP experiment several bore events were documented with S-POL radar, FM-CW radar, lidar, Multiple Antenna Profiler (MAPR), Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) and measurements by Oklahoma mesonet stations. A series of MM5 simulations of a gravity current and bore on early morning of June 4, 2002 reproduced the event with a remarkable accuracy. Availability of different turbulence parameterizations in MM5 allows comparison of performance of different turbulence parameterizations (Burk-Thompson, ETA, QL) as a function of scale. We concentrate on study of entrainment and boundary layer growth and compare turbulent kinetic energy budget terms with LES simulations using ARPS. Idealized simulations with ARPS and WRF are planned for the future to gain deeper understanding of the behavior of the different turbulence schemes.
