Expanding Weather Event Simulator capabilities for National Weather Service training

Michael A. Magsig, CIMMS/Univ. of Oklahoma, Norman, OK

Technology improvements and training are key elements in successful predictions and the delivery of National Weather Service products and services. To begin addressing operational AWIPS training requirements the Warning Decision Training Branch led a collaborative effort to develop limited training capabilities using operational AWIPS software and archived data sets running on an offline training workstation. The WES has been fielded throughout the NWS, and it has become a critical component in NWS training. Within the last year WDTB has begun to implement an expansion of WES capabilities to improve WES functionality and keep in sync with the frequent releases of AWIPS software. This paper will outline the improvements in training functionality of the WES that will affect the NWS training program and the opportunities to use this tool for collaboration with NWS partners.
