A coupled Atmospheric and Hydrological Model to investigate the surface hydrology features of 1993 Mississippi flood event with GIS/RS applications
Suseela Reddy Remata, Jackson State University, Jackson, MS; and M. Vatti and P. Chigbu
Understanding, modeling and predicting the weather dynamics and meteorological processes for the Gulf coastal region is important for agriculture, fisheries and forestry management as this region occupies a strategic position in the economy of the nation. Further this region can serve as a focus for understanding the natural interactions between the atmosphere, land and water. Under NOAA/NESDIS ERAISA (Environmental Risk Assessment Integrative Systems Approach) project, previous studies by Reddy et.al, 2003 and Mallikharjun Vatti & Reddy et.al 2003, provided a prototype ERAISA using GIS/RS applications for historic May 1995 Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi Flood event. In the present study, we investigate a case study of 1993 Mississippi flood event using a coupled Atmospheric and Hydrological model to study surface hydrology features such as runoff, salinity etc. We apply GIS/RS tools to the model simulations for an assessment of environmental risk analysis. The results will be presented and discussed.
