Validation of MM5 for evolution of cold fronts approaching the Gulf of Mexico

Results will be presented from a preliminary validation study of the twice-daily operational runs of the MM5 mesoscale meteorological model over Mississippi and Louisiana. To examine how well the model simulates the structure and evolution of cold fronts as they approach the northern Gulf of Mexico, time series of surface meteorological parameters are being compared from the model output and observations taken at select stations. Within Louisiana, most of the stations to be used are from the Louisiana Agriclimatic Information System (LAIS), because of their high temporal resolution (one minute). We will demonstrate the performance of the model for different types of frontal transition at a few key stations. Besides plotting the observed and modeled time series together, basic metrics will be determined such as time shift between observed and modeled frontal passage, maximum decrease in dewpoint over a one hour period, and vector difference between mean wind over the previous hour and over the following hour.
