Land-surface issues in the NCEP Regional Reanalysis
Michael Ek, NOAA/NWS/NCEP, Suitland, MD; and K. Mitchell, P. Shafran, and D. Jovic
We will examine the role of the Noah land-surface model coupled with the mesoscale Eta model used for the NCEP 25-year North American Regional Reanalysis project. We will describe the current version of the Noah LSM, the steps taken to initialize land and surface states, review the surface-related model output plus various 'sanity' checks (e.g. balance of the surface energy and water budgets), and the use of nearest neighbor rather than interpolation for land-surface and associated output fields. Finally, we will assess the evolution of the land-surface during the 25-year period of the Regional Reanalysis.
