Qualitative Assessment of Operational Ocean Remote Sensing Products Using GIS

Michael Soracco, Systems Engineering and Security, Inc. For NOAA/NESDIS/ORA CoastWatch, Camp Springs, MD; and N. W. Parsons

The NOAA CoastWatch/OceanWatch Program continues to expand its geographic coverage and accompanying suite of near real-time ocean satellite products. During the past 18 months, ocean products from MODIS (TERRA and AQUA), TMI (TRMM), and GLI (ADEOS-II) have been added to the near real-time processing stream. These ocean color and sea surface temperature products compliment the existing suite of products from Imager (GOES), AVHRR (POES), and SeaWiFS (OrbView-2). Simultaneous comparison of products that differ in spatial resolution, geographic coverage, and processing techniques is required to assess whether a data processing algorithm is suitable for supporting NOAA mission requirements. To assist in this evaluation, Geographic Information System (GIS) software is used to perform timely qualitative analyses of the near-real-time CoastWatch data products.
