Satellite Observations of Ocean Moisture Advection and its Effect on South American Low Level Jet and Hydrological Balances

Xiaosu Xie, JPL, Pasadena, CA; and W. T. Liu and W. Tang

The remote oceanic influences on South American Low Level Jet (SALLJ) and moisture budget over South America are assessed using high resolution spacebased observations of ocean surface winds, sea surface temperature, and integrated water transport. The hydrologic balance in the Amazon and SALLJ has been related to variation of sea surface temperature and convergence zones over the oceans. Moisture transport may be one of the physical link and we have developed technique of estimating integrated moisture transport using spacebased observations. Its relationship to spacebased observation of precipitation and ground-based measurements of wind profile and rain in South America is also evaluated.
