Relationship between aircraft-related turbulence and synoptic meteorological data

Douglas Brent McRoberts Sr., Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN

A pressing problem in the field of aviation is the relationship between aircraft turbulence and meteorological information that is readily available to pilots. Numerous reports on turbulence from flights have been recorded by pilots from the Purdue University Department of Aviation Technology. Following the collection of turbulence information, routine meteorological data were collected at times and locations near those of the turbulence reports. Focusing on the upper troposphere, where most of the aircraft turbulence data taken were collected, a variety fields including wind shears and stability indices were collected. The various meteorological fields were then analyzed to determine relationships with turbulence.
