Space weather is a Johnny-come-lately in the weather business and so its practitioners can benefit from the experience of terrestrial meteorologists. This talk will show how the concepts of air masses, weather fronts, storm systems, persistence and climatological forecasts, objective analysis, numerical weather prediction and data assimilation-all pioneered by terrestrial meteorologists-are now being developed for space weather applications. Similarities and differences in the two domains of application will be illustrated.
