Representativeness of Soil Moisture Conditions in Central Oklahoma During the Enhanced Drying Phase
Hall 4AB
Recent research focused on data from the Oklahoma Mesonet has that soil moisture transitions between four distinct phases throughout the year. The phase during which the largest changes in soil moisture values occur is the enhanced drying phase which lasts from approximately 15 June through the 31 August. During June and July of 2003, over 1500 field samples of soil moisture were collected at 34 Oklahoma Mesonet sites in Central Oklahoma which currently measure soil moisture using Campbell Scientific 229-L matric potential sensors. Field sample soil cores were collected every 5 cm down to the 30 cm depth. The moisture values in the field samples were compared with the senor measurements to determine the spatial and temporal representativeness of the soil moisture at the sites
