A grid of five ground based interferometers called Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometers (AERI) have been in operation within the southern great plains of the United States since December 1998. These systems accurately measure the downwelling infrared radiation between 5 - 20 microns at less than one wavenumber resolution. The retrieval of temperature and moisture profiles from these radiances have been improved to provide higher vertical resolution in the first kilometer of the atmosphere and increased temporal resolution of less than one minute. Results will be shown indicating the improved resolution of retrieved thermodynamic profiles and there utility for planetary boundary layer research.
