Spatial and temporal variability of global soil wetness

Soil wetness plays an important role in the processes of land-atmosphere interaction and global energy and water cycles. Studying the spatial and temporal variability of global soil wetness and its relationship with global climate variability is very important for understanding its impacts on climate. The Global Soil Wetness Project (GSWP) is an ongoing environmental modeling research activity of the GEWEX Global Land-Atmosphere System Study (GLASS) and the International Satellite Land-Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) to derive a global continuous multi-model analysis dataset, which includes soil wetness. In this study, the spatial and temporal variability of global soil wetness from the datasets generated by the GSWP is being evaluated in comparison with station observations and currently available global soil wetness products. Also, the interannual variability of soil wetness and its association with other climate variations, such as El Niņo/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is being explored.
