Improving the Operation of the GCOS Surface and Upper Air Networks

Richard K. Thigpen, GCOS Secretariat, Silver Spring, MD

A number of activities are directed towards improving the operation of the GCOS Surface (GSN) and Upper Air (GUAN) Networks. This paper will provide a status report on some of these activities. Regional Technical Support Projects (TSP) have been established in some regions and many direct renovation projects have been completed. The TSP have proved very effective at improving the station meta data held in the GCOS archives and also at gathering and rescuing historical data. Special lead centers (CBS lead Centers for GCOS) have been established to provide better oversight and direct interface with operating stations. Workshops have been held in several regions to improve the quality of reports. .
