THE ATLANTIC MULTIDECADAL OSCILLATION (AMO) AND WINTER SNOWFALL IN THE EASTERN US AND EURASIA

The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation as has been linked to the recent increase in hurricane activity since its phase change in 1995. This is because the tripole of ocean temperatures in the Atlantic associated with the current warm phase has above normal temperatures throughout the tropical Atlantic MDR (Main Development Region) for tropical cyclones.

The warm AMO tripole also favors the increased frequency of the negative phase of the NAO. In that phase, cold season snow is favored in the eastern United States and in Eurasia and the author will show how in the current warm phase, new single storm, season and multi-season snow records have occurred in many of these locations.
