Network Enabled Operations for Weather Information

Kenneth M. Leonard, FAA, Washington, DC; and D. J. Pace and R. C. Deininger

Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS) Network Enabled Weather is the backbone of the NGATS weather support services. It enables the non-point to point, networked access of weather information from distributed weather information sources by all users, and integration of information from all weather sources into NGATS decision support systems. The NGATS concept for weather hinges on the ability to develop a common weather “picture,” and to integrate that picture into NGATS decision-making processes. An effort is needed to fuse tens of thousands of global weather observations and sensor reports from ground-, airborne-, and space-based sources into a single national (eventually global) weather information system, constantly updated as needed. NGATS Network Enabled Weather will power the creation of the common weather picture. For that common “picture” to yield consistent, timely decisions, further effort is needed to develop automated decision-support tools that help users comprehend and manage the risks to their operation posed by weather. This paper describes how network enabled operations apply in the weather information context. .
