Diurnal Cycle Variations if Precipitation over the Americas

John E. Janowiak, NWS/NCEP/CPC, Camp Springs, MD; and V. Kousky and R. Joyce

We examine the diurnal characteristics in rainfall over the Americas using hourly, high resolution satellite/rain gauge integrated analyses of precipitation. Detailed regional examinations are made that reveal intricate features over North and South America. We also assess the ability of short-range numerical model forecasts of precipitation to mimic the diurnal variations that are observed in nature. .
