The cause of the positive cloud to ground lightning anomaly over the Midwest Unites States: An exploratory survey from 2000 to 2005

An exploratory survey of positive cloud to ground lightning flashes was conducted over the Midwest United States using data from the National Lightning Detection Network. It has been previously found that the Midwest has an anomalous percentage of positive cloud to ground (+CG) lightning (Orville and Huffines, 2001). Published research does not focus exclusively on the Midwest as an area of study. This exploratory survey is in place to detect the cause of this anomaly. The preliminary findings of the research points to single cell thunderstorms and their environment as the cause of this +CG lightning anomaly.
