FAIR WEATHER CLIMATOLOGY REVEALED BY THE CCNY LIDAR

Atmospheric structure revealed by the City College of New York (CCNY) vertically pointing backscatter has been used to compile a 3-year climatology of related weather conditions. The lidar operates at three wavelengths (355, 532, and 1064 nm), providing 1-minute soundings from 500 m to 15 km with vertical resolution of 10 m. Meteorological situations detected include identification of the atmospheric boundary layer, haze layers aloft, frontal passages, sea breezes and high clouds. Lidar profiles are analyzed in conjunction with soundings, satellite products and imagery including MODIS and the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System Satellite Lidar, as well as trajectory analysis to diagnose the various abovementioned situations and determine the origin of haze layers.
