Performance measures for the AWIPS communications network

Kenneth L. Stricklett, NOAA/NWS, Silver Spring, MD; and K. B. Nguyen and M. D. Buckingham

The National Weather Service (NWS) is planning to consolidate much of its Information Technology networking services to a single provider. Under this proposal, Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) network communications within the continental US would be supported by a single Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) Wide Area Network (WAN). An MPLS Pilot demonstration is being conducted to evaluate system requirements and to develop strategies for migrating AWIPS WAN communications to an MPLS WAN. The Pilot demonstration includes four AWIPS sites in the NWS Central Region and the AWIPS National Control Facility (NCF) located in Silver Spring, MD. As part of this effort, the NWS Field Systems Operations Center, Field Test and Evaluation Branch will monitor the performance of AWIPS network communications over the existing Frame Relay WAN and the proposed MPLS WAN using the Product Availability Monitoring System (PAMS). The figures-of-merit reported for network performance include the message success rate and the message delay. Performance characteristics for the AWIPS communications network are discussed.
