Devising an online collaborative decision-support GIS for climate monitoring site selection

The Center for Spatial Analysis (CSA) at the University of Oklahoma has designed spatial analysis techniques for decision support for NOAA's modernized climate monitoring site selection. However, interaction with the selection teams and the production of multiple static sets of analytical products for site selectors is time consuming. If other data sets are added later, then a new set of products must be generated. A more effective approach to communicate this critical information is via an interactive online decision-support GIS that will integrate spatial querying, geoprocessing, and cartographic modeling of the criteria used for the selection process. This online GIS will give site selectors in varied locations the ability to modify decision criteria to examine a range of possible scenarios. Creating updated products after new data sources are added is accomplished easily because the output is generated on-the-fly and displayed in a users web browser, rather than requiring the generation of a whole new set of static products.
In this presentation we will discuss our current efforts in the design of the online GIS and also the relative merits and disadvantages of various software solutions available.
