Impacts of assimilating Aura OMI and HIRDLS ozone on the NCEP Global Forecast System

The Aura OMI total ozone has been tested in the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS), which currently assimilates NOAA-16 and NOAA-17 SBUV/2 ozone only. The HIRDLS ozone profiles will also be tested when the data are released in the near future. Those experiments are preparations for future use of NPOESS OMPS ozone data, because OMI and HIRDLS are similar to the Nadir Mapper and the Limb Profiler on OMPS. A series of parallel experiments have been conducted to determine the impact of the high resolution ozone data on model's performance including analyses and forecast. The immediate positive effect is that the assimilated ozone field shows much finer structure which SBUV/2 does not resolve. The impact on radiative transfer of the GFS, and how it affects forecast of temperature and circulations, will be examined in terms of various standards, such as anomaly correlations, bias and RMS errors of forecast and validation fields. In addition, because OMI has better coverage for 80 degrees to the Pole than SBUV/2, the 2006 austral spring season will be chosen to test possible improvement of the GFS by including OMI and HIRDLS data in monitoring and forecasting the Antarctic ozone hole.
