Interactive GIS-based Environmental Activities for K-12 Educators

Currently, the Delaware Environmental Observing System (DEOS) is developing an interactive Geographic Information System (GIS) to provide K-12 teachers with state standards-based lesson plans and activities. The real-time and historical weather, streamflow, and tidal information available through DEOS will enhance teaching of the State's science and geography standards by providing students with current and historical scenarios to assess environmental interactions and impacts. This will be accomplished through the use of a client/server application using the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI)'s ArcGIS 9.1 Server to display weather data. Use of the ArcGIS 9.1 Server modular web system will allow users to connect to the application over the internet, thereby providing information such that teachers and students will be able to use an interactive mapping GIS, but not require them to have it installed on their local machines. The DEOS Interactive GIS consists of three main components: (1) a collection of standards-appropriate lessons, (2) a toolbox of GIS tasks and capabilities, and (3) an interface designed to provide easy access and functionality. In particular, we will focus on tasks specifically related to enhancing the state standards that relate to the environment (both Science and Geography standards). The Delaware Geographic Alliance and the Delaware Space Grant Consortium are jointly contributing to this project.
