This presentation describes an implementation of a Multi-Radar Storm Cell Identification and Tracking (MR-SCIT) algorithm that utilizes data merged from multiple radars in the framework of the Warning Decision Support System – Integrated Information (WDSS-II). MR-SCIT is a descendant of the Storm Cell Identification and Tracking (SCIT) algorithm that was developed in the 1990s and implemented in Build 9.0 of the WSR-88D system's Radar Products Generator software in 1997. MR-SCIT addresses several limitations of the original SCIT algorithm, including improved cell identification and analysis, improved storm tracking, and greater sampling from multiple radars.
The presentation describes the function of the application in detail. We also compare the skill of the MR-SCIT algorithm versus that of the original SCIT algorithm on several cases to determine the strength and weaknesses of each in the identification and tracking of storm cells.
