Operational and scientific applications of ozone data from NPP and NPOESS

The OMPS (Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite) will become the primary source of space-based U.S. operational ozone measurements after the launch of NPP (the NPOESS Preparatory Project) in 2009, and of the NPOESS (National Polar-orbiting Environmental Satellite System) in 2013. The OMPS measurements of ozone will be supplemented by measurements by the CrIS (Cross Track Infrared Sounder) instrument on the same spacecraft. We describe the types of measurements that OMPS will make, their heritage, and their expected quality. We also describe the currently planned and potential data products from OMPS, and currently planned and potential operational and scientific applications of those data products.
