Cascading weather and climate forecasts—“The Weather World story”
Jeffrey M. Warner, Penn State Univ., University Park, PA; and P. G. Knight
Often, the format of our broadcast presentation dictates the content of our forecasts. Shifting paradigms to allow content to be the arbiter of format opens new avenues of presenting longer range forecasts. Weather World, a fifteen minute weather magazine show, broadcast daily for 21 years on several Pennsylvania public television stations and since 2004 on Pennsylvania Cable Network, offers a real-time laboratory in proving this paradigm. From the daily short range forecast to experimental long-term outlooks, a series of examples from Weather World will be shown that reflect the necessity of format changes needed to accommodate vastly different prediction content.
