Third Symposium on Future National Operational Environmental Satellites

P2.7

Status of the NPOESS VIIRS Instrument

Gary Ross, NOAA/NESDIS/NPOESS, Silver Spring, MD; and J. R. Swenson

The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) will operate the next generation polar environmental satellites and associated ground system. The VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite) as a prime NPOESS spacecraft instrument will be providing 22 of the 39 operational EDRs (Environmental Data Records) to the military, civilian, and science community. During the last year, the VIIRS Engineering Development Unit (EDU) has completed both ambient and thermal vacuum testing. Integration of the Flight Unit One (FU1) is also nearing completion with initial ambient testing to begin soon. This presentation provides details on the programmatic and technical status of the VIIRS EDU and FU1 in support of both the NPP (NPOESS Preparatory Program) and NPOESS Programs.
