The NSF and Emerging Opportunities in Space Weather
Richard Behnke, NSF, Arlington, VA
An independent assessment of the accomplishments of the National Space Weather (NSWP) program over the last decade has recently been completed. This assessment identified many NSWP successes as well as new opportunities. Interagency cooperation has been the key to past success in space weather operations and research, and it remains vital to the NSF's plans for future progress in NSWP research. Exciting science topics remain to be explored. Emerging research opportunites -- involving autonomous deployable sensors, advanced lidars and imagers, cutting-edge solid-state ionospheric radars, new optical and radio solar telescopes, and small satellite technologies -- will help direct future NSF investments.
