As a primary source of news, more people rely on local TV news than any other medium. Broadcast meteorologists have a unique opportunity to be the “station scientist” on their local news station. The American Meteorological Society has partnered with the American Institute of Physics in their production of Discoveries and Breakthroughs Inside Science (DBIS). DBIS are 90-second science news segments that are aired during the local news broadcast in television markets throughout the country. Approximately 4 of these segments each month focus on meteorology research.

Meet members of the DBIS production team including the director and the senior science editor. Hear why the AMS got involved and how they work with the program. Hear from Ivanhoe Broadcast News about the distributions and marketing of DBIS. Learn from broadcast meteorologists and news directors about how they use DBIS during their local news broadcast to be the “station scientist.” Find out how you can become involved with DBIS and if your station is already receiving the DBIS program. Also, how you can earn Professional Development score points by using DBIS.
