Temperature deviation study of three co-located platinum resistance thermometers

The United States Climate Reference Network (USCRN) utilizes three Platinum Resistance Thermometers (PRT) that are each enclosed in the inlet of a Met One aspirated shield. The redundancy of these three temperature measurements yields high confidence in assessing the surface air temperature. Temperature deviations between the three PRTs are believed to be moisture driven during episodes when all three PRTs are not within .3°C, all other hardware is working properly, and environmental conditions are high in relative humidity. Our research seeks to validate this point by studying the microclimate of the inlets of the three co-located shields. Each of these inlets contains a PRT, one wetness sensor, and a relative humidity sensor.
